Session I 9am to 9:45am
1) Alzheimer’s, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Association Services
- Recognize the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s
- Identify symptoms of dementia
- Identify Alzheimer’s Association services, support and resources
- Learn current facts and figures
2) Communication: Create a Positive Environment
- Recognize two examples of non-verbal communication
- List three rules of good communication
- Recognize two ways we can help someone communicate
- Identify two things we can learn from non-verbal communication
- Identify what it means to “join the person in their reality”
- Recognize what it means to focus on the feelings, not the words
Session II 9:45am to 10:45am
3) Activity Based Person-Centered Care/Graded Support with Activities
- Describe activity based person-centered care
- Identify meaningful and appropriate engagement
- Describe two types of sensory engagement activities
- Define graded support
4) Interactive Activities
- Knowing the person – Memory box
- Understand the importance of using props for engagement
- Person Centered Sensory Box
- Activities for Persons with dementia
Session III 10:45am-12pm
5) Horticulture therapy
- Describe and differentiate between the different forms of horticulture therapies.
- Identify the benefits of horticulture programs for individuals living with dementia.
- Explain the many ways that plants and gardening can improve overall well-being and be part of a meaningful visits.
OUR SPEAKERS
Esther Pearl of Simsbury CT is a Program Manager/Director, for the Alzheimer’s Association, CT Chapter since 2017. She has a Masters in Counseling from Central Connecticut State University. She has experience in education, recruiting , creative programing and event development and implementation. Her goals are to educate, inform and support those living with memory loss, thier families and professional caregivers.
Carolyn DeRocco of New Milford CT is the Vice President of Programs and Education for the Alzheimer’s Association, CT Chapter since 2012. She holds a BA in Human Relations from St Joseph’s College in Patchogue,NY. She is responsible for providing management level leadership for the development, oversight, execution, and monitoring of the following chapter programs and services: Helpline, Chapter Respite, Support Groups, Early-Stage Programming, Care Consultation, Multi-cultural Outreach, MD Outreach, Statewide Education Conferences, Health System partnerships and all professional and community education programs. These services include the recruitment and management of program volunteers.
Jeffrey Eleveld, Horticulture Therapist, 0ver 15 year’s experience, owner, The People Plant Connection. Jeff is an avid bonsai enthusiast and plant collector boasting just over 300 plants in his personal indoor collection including 20+ tropical bonsai. Jeff also has well as over 100 deciduous and conifer bonsai that he keeps outside year-round. Also, a 20ft greenhouse chalk full of plant material for programs and the shop. Engagements across New England have included, CT Alzheimer’s Association Conference, 2014/2016. Presenter at the Connecticut Flower and Garden Show, 2015/2022/2024, Presenter at Southeastern Home and Garden Show at the Mohegan Sun, 2023/2025 and of course Garden Clubs across the Northeast. Jeff was a presenter/speaker at the, New England Alzheimer’s Conference held in April 2022. As well as the Mohegan Sun’s Cannabis Expo, “The History of Cannabis”, 2023. Jeff has been featured on WFSB, channel 3’s Better Connecticut, as well as several evening news segments. Jeff is also a member of the town Plainville’s marketing steering committee as well as a member of the downtown business district association.
Copies of the handouts, our evaluation form and the log-in information will be provided by CATRD via email to the registrants.
Upon conclusion of the program participant must complete the evaluation. Once the evaluation has been received your Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to you.
Who should participate?
Anyone working with people at skilled nursing facilities, residential care homes, rehabilitation facilities, adult day care centers, home care agencies, etc., including but not limited to: TRD’s, CNAs, home health aides, social workers, nurses, rehabilitation professionals, administrators, memory or dementia unit managers / supervisors. Clock hours earned can be used toward hours for your National Certification(s).

- Professional Member ~ $ 40.00
Professional members are individuals who are principally engaged in providing Therapeutic Recreation for the elderly. They shall be entitled to voting privileges and may hold an office within the Association.
- Associate Member ~ $35.00
Associate members are individuals who do not meet the criteria for professional membership but are interested in the profession and share the objectives of the corporation. This category includes students, retired persons and interested individuals. They have no voting rights and may not hold an office.
