Session 1: 9:00am to 10:30am – Impact: Designing a Fall Prevention Program for Seniors
Description
Falls pose a big problem for seniors and those who care for them. One in four persons over the age of 65 will experience a fall this year, which can have a negative impact on their health and lifestyle. Expand your knowledge of fall risk and prevention and explore techniques for implementing a multi-faceted fall prevention program that can make a big impact on quality care and quality of life for your seniors.
Program Objective
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to identify common factors that contribute to falls in seniors and describe at least five key areas that can be impacted by recreational activity programs/professionals.

We know that the discovery of life stories is the heart of person-centered care and key in celebrating the uniqueness of each individual. In this session we will explore creative ways to move beyond the interview and design programs that will help us capture and share their stories in practical and meaningful ways.

Carla Bacon Smith has been working with seniors in long-term care for over 40 years. Trained as a Music Therapist, she graduated from Illinois State University and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner. Her practical, experiential style of teaching stems from her experience “in the trenches “of senior care, working to impact quality of life through activities in long term care, dementia care and assisted living, and designing leisure programming for short term rehab patients. She served as the Activity Director at a skilled care and rehabilitation facility in the Chicago area for over 25 years, and is currently the Director of Lifestyles in one of the nation’s largest continuing care communities, leading a talented team of Activity Professionals to provide meaningful, creative programming for seniors in all levels of care. With a passion for encouraging creativity in seniors and those who serve them, Carla formed Lifetime Expressions in 2003, authoring books, designing resources, and presenting educational sessions on various creative topics for healthcare and recreation professionals across the nation.
Copies of the handouts, our evaluation form and the log-in information will be provided by CATRD via email to the registrants.
Upon conclusion of the program participant must complete the evaluation. Once the evaluation has been received your Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to you.
Who should participate?
Anyone working with people at skilled nursing facilities, residential care homes, rehabilitation facilities, adult day care centers, home care agencies, etc., including but not limited to: TRD’s, CNAs, home health aides, social workers, nurses, rehabilitation professionals, administrators, memory or dementia unit managers / supervisors. Clock hours earned can be used toward hours for your National Certification(s).

Professional members are individuals who are principally engaged in providing Therapeutic Recreation for the elderly. They shall be entitled to voting privileges and may hold an office within the Association.
- Associate Member ~ $35.00
Associate members are individuals who do not meet the criteria for professional membership but are interested in the profession and share the objectives of the corporation. This category includes students, retired persons and interested individuals. They have no voting rights and may not hold an office.
