The Work of Aging

What is successful aging?  In today’s realm of person-centered care it is different for each one of our seniors.  After reviewing aging facts and concepts, our speaker will delve into activities to be used to meet your seniors needs and the challenges that may be encountered.

OUR SPEAKER

 Pamela Krist Atwood, Author

Pamela Krist Atwood is a gerontologist, licensed professional counselor associate, author and experienced dementia specialist.  In addition to her work with CaringKind, she owns Atwood Dementia Group Counseling, Coaching & Consulting based in CT.  Pam and her husband Tom co-authored Total Engagement: Activities for Growth & Expression in Older Adults (Health Professions Press, 2020).  She has worked in aging services for the past 30 years and volunteers to facilitate support groups for the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Parkinson’s Disease Association. Pam is a graduate of Clark University (BA), University of Saint Joseph (MA) and Southern New Hampshire University (MA).

Pamela will present a PowerPoint program with handouts, polling questions and open-ended questions through the Chat Function to effectively cover all the material for the educational sessions. 

Copies of the handouts, our evaluation form and the log-in information will be provided by CATRD via email to the registrants.

 Upon conclusion of the program participant must complete the evaluation. Once the evaluation has been received your Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to you.

 Who should participate?

Anyone working with people at skilled nursing facilities, residential care homes, rehabilitation facilities, adult day care centers, home care agencies, etc., including but not limited to: TRD’s, CNAs, home health aides, social workers, nurses, rehabilitation professionals, administrators, memory or dementia unit managers / supervisors. Clock hours earned can be used toward hours for your National Certification(s).

9:00-9:50
The Work of Aging
This session will review the psychosocial development of aging, and the challenges that individuals face. Participants will be able to:
1) List at least 3 life changes in the 3rd age
2) Discuss health changes, losses and role in society for older adults
3) Compare concepts of “successful” aging
10:00-10:50
Physical & Emotional Activities for Meaningful Engagement
This session presents the concept of meaningful activities to support the changes reviewed in the first session. Participants will be able to:
1) Describe multi-sensory/multi-modal physical activities which promote balance and strength
2) Create at least 3 activities to tap into emotional strengths of clients
3)  Design strategies to adapt traditional recreational activities to benefit meaningful engagement
11:00-12:00
Addressing Challenges in Activity Delivery
Even with a creative drive to enhance therapeutic approaches to activities, TRDs often face real challenges in presenting programs. Participants will be able to:
1) Plan parallel programming to meet a variety of abilities among clients
2) Explain the benefits of Montessori approaches for adapted activities in dementia care
3) Identify resources to promote activities as a source of life enrichment for clients, families, and staff.

  • Professional Member ~ $ 40.00

Professional members are individuals who are principally engaged in providing Therapeutic Recreation for the elderly. They shall be entitled to voting privileges and may hold an office within the Association.

  • Associate Member ~ $35.00

Associate members are individuals who do not meet the criteria for professional membership but are interested in the profession and share the objectives of the corporation. This category includes students, retired persons and interested individuals. They have no voting rights and may not hold an office.
